Garden – Jiří Papoušek

Roztoky, Prague West

Jiri in his garden combines various features, enabling him to grow a wide range of plants with quite different requirements. You can see here two areas with crevices from limestone and also from slate, collected during the construction of the long tunnel of the new highway. All slate stones were manually loaded on the trailer with help of his sons Vaclav and Ondrej. On the East side of the house Jiri build 10 meters long tunnel covered with a plastic roof and with a tufa wall inside. Tufa was transported again on a trailer with manual loading from the quarry located 700 km from the garden. The tunnel shows encouraging results in a cultivation of various saxatile plants like Dionysia, Saxifraga, dwarf Daphne and the Primula allionii hybrids.

In another part of the garden, you can see raised beds from granite and peat blocks on more shaded sides. There are well-selected Rhododendrons. There is also a new alpine house for the cultivation in pots with a new tufa wall outside it. Very artistic is his new front large crevice garden made from narrow limestone stones.  Jiri likes to propagate a wide range of plants from cuttings and seeds which are prepared for sale. His main focus is cushion plants, Daphne and Dionysia.
